A recent incident at a high school in Sydney's southwest has brought attention to the misuse of artificial intelligence (AI) in creating non-consensual explicit content. A Year 12 male student allegedly used AI to produce deepfake pornographic images of female classmates by manipulating innocent photos sourced from social media and school events. These fabricated images were then reportedly shared online.

The school administration became aware of the situation and promptly informed parents and students through an email, emphasizing that the affected students had done nothing wrong and that the images were artificially generated. The New South Wales (NSW) Department of Education, in collaboration with the police, has initiated an investigation into the matter. NSW Minister for Education, Prue Car, condemned the incident as "abhorrent" and assured that the student responsible would face disciplinary action.

This case mirrors a similar incident in Victoria last year, where a student allegedly created explicit deepfake images of about 50 girls from a school. In response to the growing concern over non-consensual deepfake pornography, the Australian Senate passed a bill in August aimed at combating this issue, reflecting the serious nature of such offenses.

The rise of AI-generated deepfake technology has made it increasingly accessible to create realistic yet fabricated explicit content, raising significant ethical and legal concerns. Experts urge vigilance and proactive measures to address this misuse, emphasizing the importance of education and awareness to prevent such incidents.
